Renowned for its historical charm and vibrant culture, Lyon has been asserting its position as a global hub for events. Every year, the city is the host to a wide range of national and international gatherings, festivals, competitions, showcasing its vibrant cultural scene and proving its qualities as a host for major events. Discover some of them.

Festival Lumière – Grand Lyon Film Festival

Every year, the birthplace of cinematography invites the world of film (actors, directors, critics, etc.) to celebrate the vitality of the 7th art. Created in 2009, the Festival Lumière, also known as the Grand Lyon Film Festival, is a must-attend international event for film fans from all over the world. At each edition, some of the biggest names in international cinema take part in the event, to the delight of local and international visitors alike.

SIRHA (International trade fair for the catering, hotel and food industries)

Similar to its pride in cinema, Lyon cherishes its rich tradition of French gastronomy. To celebrate this, the city hosts SIRHA, one of the most prestigious world events for gastronomy, catering and hospitality. Held every two years at Eurexpo Lyon (where WorldSkills Lyon 2024 will take place), the international event brings together thousands of professionals from all corners of the world. Only reserved for professionals in the sector, the last edition welcomed around 210,000 visitors.

Dance and Contemporary art biennales

Lyon puts the spotlight on its vibrant arts scene through the organization of two events: the Dance Biennale and the Contemporary Art Biennale. Held every two years, these events serve as displays of the city’s cultural diversity and artistic richness. The Lyon Dance Biennale welcomes dancers, choreographers, and enthusiasts from all over the world, celebrating a passion for dance. The Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale offers a stage for pioneering artistic exploration, with artists and art aficionados gathering to celebrate art in all its forms. These gatherings, dispersed across various venues in Lyon, bring together diverse audiences to revel in the joys of creativity and foster cultural exchange.

The Fête des Lumières (Festival of lights)

With several million visitors each year coming from around the world, the Fête des Lumières stands as Lyon’s most significant event of the year. Spanning four days around December 8th, this celebration sees both local and international artists illuminating the city of Lyon, creating a truly unique spectacle. Drawing in not only local and national visitors but also an international audience, the event showcases the city’s cultural richness and artistic wonders on a global stage. From intricate light installations to mesmerizing performances, the Fête des Lumières captivates audiences from near and far, making it a highlight of Lyon’s cultural calendar.
