As we approach the conclusion of 2023 and anticipate the arrival of 2024, the year of the 47th WorldSkills Competition, we invite you to gain a preview of the charming city of Lyon. Before you all join us here next September, explore what the city has to offer and immerse yourself in the December happenings among the locals. Here are a few of them.

Take a walk around Lyon’s Christmas Markets…

Every December, the city comes alive with a beloved Christmas market located at ‘Place Carnot,’ a renowned square ideally positioned between the Rhône and Saône Rivers. This location transforms into a delightful Christmas Village, featuring around 100 wooden cabins that showcase the craftsmanship and skills of local and national food producers as well as artisans. Visitors to the Christmas Market have the opportunity to indulge in a range of treats, including specialties like French crêpes, mulled wine, aligot (a dish combining melted cheese with mashed potatoes), and other culinary delights. Additionally, they can shop for local products like jams, wine, honey, gingerbread, foie gras, and liqueurs. Visiting the Lyon Christmas Market provides an opportunity to discover the latest gift ideas and appreciate a diverse array of Christmas decorations, ranging from garlands and baubles to stars, Santons, and various festive ornaments.

Lyon’s cultural scene is vibrant and diverse, catering to a variety of interests. In December, as temperatures drop, exploring the city’s numerous museums provides a chance to delve into its history or appreciate artistic creations. From exploring cinema history to the intricacies of silk production, Lyon’s museums cover a broad spectrum of engaging topics. In addition to its wealth of museums, Lyon hosts numerous theaters and cultural institutions where locals can immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of entertainment. Whether it’s attending a play, a captivating show, a film screening, an opera performance, or participating in original and groundbreaking cultural events, Lyon offers plenty of options for cultural enrichment.

…Or for the more adventurous, have fun with an outdoor activity

Residents unafraid of the cold embrace numerous outdoor activities within the city, including the well-loved annual winter ice skating rink located in the Monplaisir neighborhood (once home to the Lumière brothers, pioneers of cinema). Another attraction is the annual big wheel that graces the bustling Bellecour square in the city centre. It’s a delightful way for locals to enjoy the outdoors and admire the breathtaking city views during the holiday season!

As we immerse ourselves in the joyous celebrations of this end of the year season, we send all of you our warmest wishes for a splendid conclusion to 2023. As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of 2024, may the coming year bring forth new opportunities, joy, and fulfillment. Cheers to a wonderful transition into the promising year that lies ahead!
